Is Cenk Tosun Good Enough For Tottenham?

The 26-year-old Turkish international forward who plays for Besiktas, was on the radar of clubs like Newcastle United and Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. But both clubs failed to entice the Turkish side into selling the player as he remained at the Vodafone Arena for one more season.

But according to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the £17.5m rated Tosun and could go after him in the upcoming January transfer window. So, is Cenk Tosun, a virtually unknown footballer, good enough for a big team like Tottenham? Let’s take a look.

Starting off from Turkish side Gaziantepspor in 2011, he established himself at senior level after helping his side win the Spor Toto Cup in his very first season. He spent four seasons at Gaziantepspor notching up 51 goals in 130 appearances before joining Turkish giants, Besiktas in 2014.

The 26-year-old forward definitely has an eye for goal with 52 goals in 122 appearances for BJK. Good with both his left and right foot, Tosun is a big threat inside the penalty box. In fact, his goal against Benfica in the Champions League last season was voted as the goal of the tournament.

Tosun also has some not so regular idols he looks up to, in the form of Demba Ba and Mario Gomez. The Turkish forward has claimed that he has gained a lot of his knowledge about the game from both Gomez and Ba.

He certainly managed to impress his coaches at the club after breaking into the first team with his performances at both domestic and European level. Everything seems quiet about the player but, do Tottenham really need an another forward at this moment of time is the question.

With goal-rich attack that has the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and summer signing Fernando Llorente, it is hard to see Cenk Tosun getting into Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI.

Even if there were any injuries or suspensions, Spurs have enough back-up in their ranks to do the job of scoring this season. A move for Cenk Tosun looks pointless at the moment as he is likely to warm the bench despite his special attributes.

Mauricio Pochettino will not want another Vincent Janssen kind of situation on his hands, who failed to make an impact for the club after a big-money move last summer. Pochettino should certainly steer clear of the Turkish forward at least until there is a significant setback in his squad.
