Derby County 1-1 Bristol City: The Rams drop another two points at home

Derby County played out their second home draw in the space of five days as they were held 1-1 by Bristol City on Saturday.

Frank Lampard made three changes to the team that faced Nottingham Forest on Monday night, as the likes of Martyn Waghorn, Florian Jozefzoon and David Nugent replaced Tom Lawrence, Jack Marriott and Craig Bryson in the starting XI.

Derby County enjoyed plenty of possession but couldn’t penetrate a resolute a stubborn City backline, who were helped by several good saves by goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa. Bristol City themselves could have won the game had it not been for a fantastic Scott Carson save late on but in the end, it proved to be an exasperating afternoon for Derby, who failed to pick a victory at home.

Frank Lampard’s Rams began brightly as Florian Jozefzoon saw an early shot deflected wide before Scott Malone volleyed just too high over the bar. Jozefzoon could have given Derby County the lead when he was played through by Harry Wilson but the winger’s poked effort was well kept out by Maenpaa.

Maenpaa was called into action again; Mason Mount let fly one from distance but his shot was well saved by the Bristol goalkeeper. And against the run of play in the 25^th minute, Bristol went in front. Richard Keogh’s attempted header to Malone at left-back went to Jamie Paterson instead, who came in and dinked the ball over Scott Carson and into the net to stun Pride Park.

Derby should have levelled six minutes later through David Nugent but the striker headed over Wilson’s cross over the top when he should have at least hit the target. The Rams, however, were lucky not to go two behind when another sloppy play saw Bristol take advantage. Famara Diedhiou cut out a stray pass from Mount and chipped the ball over the onrushing Carson but onto the crossbar.

Derby County finally levelled in the 37^th minute; Mount fired a low ball into the six-yard box from the left which was flicked home by Martyn Waghorn.

Frank Lampard’s boys created a lot of chances in the second half, with Maenpaa keeping out Mount and Keogh’s 25-yard strike. Last but not least, the Finnish keeper made an outstanding save to deny Jayden Bogle in the injury-time.
