Norwich signing this 35-year-old veteran would be completely unnecessary – Farke should avoid it at all costs

Why Norwich City must avoid signing Angel Rangel in January

According to a report from the Football.London, Norwich City are among a few clubs interested in signing Queens Park Rangers right-back Angel Rangel in January.

Angel Rangel, 35, signed a five-month deal with Queens Park Rangers at the start of the season and has impressed so far in the Championship. The Spanish defender has made 13 appearances since his move to Loftus Road; however, his short-term deal expires in January.

It remains to be seen whether QPR will extend the contract of Angel Rangel but for now, the full-back has already garnered interest from Norwich City. But should the Canaries make a move for the veteran full-back in January?

Angel Rangel has spent the past 11 years of his career in England, having joined Swansea City from Terrassa FC back in 2007. The Spaniard became a fan favourite during his decade-long stay at Swansea City but the Swans didn’t extend his contract at the end of last season, allowing Rangel to leave the club on a free transfer.

And after being released by Swansea earlier this summer, Rangel joined QPR on a short-term contract at the start of the season. The Spaniard has managed to make a telling impact at QPR, thus establishing himself as an indispensable figure for manager Steve McClaren.

QPR’s championship rivals Norwich City, meanwhile, are top of the league with 36 points from 18 games. The Canaries didn’t get off to a wonderful start but have recovered magnificently to occupy the first place on the table.

Norwich City would definitely a couple of additions in the mid-season transfer window to give the side a push needed for promotion. But their interest in Angel Rangel doesn’t make any sense to be very honest.

Daniel Farke already has three right-sided full-backs in his squad, with teenage sensation Max Aarons establishing himself in the first-team this season.

Going by his displays, Aarons is not going to lose his place in the side any time soon, and then there is German full-back Felix Passlack, who arrived on loan from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. In case of injuries or suspensions, there is the experienced Ivo Pinto waiting in the wings.

As far as signing Rangel is concerned, it would definitely be a decent acquisition for the Canaries due to his experience but Farke should avoid signing him. Instead, he should look to strengthen other areas of the squad in January to bolster Norwich’s promotion hopes.
