Norwich 4 Liverpool 5: 3 Key Things We Learnt From The Swashbuckling Game

Share

Liverpool staged a sensational comeback after they went two goals behind but managed to win the game 5-4. The Swashbuckling match had lots of twists and turns with Liverpool opening the scoring before letting in three goals, after which they managed to take the lead only to be pulled back again by Norwich. But Lallana rifled in his dramatic late finish to cap barnstorming encounter and spark incredible scenes in the away dug-out. All the pros and cons of Klopp’s philosophy was on display during this thrilling encounter.

  1. Firmino making the most of his chances.

The Brazilian has shown glimpses of his special talent against the top teams like Manchester City, Chelsea and, most notably, in the recent thriller against Arsenal. He was again chosen ahead of Benteke, which goes to show the faith Klopp has on him. He was involved in the majority of the attacks that Liverpool could muster in the first half.  Used once again in centre-forward position, his touch, awareness and inventiveness was clearly visible in his two well-taken goals. He has been in good form with 4 goals in the last three EPL matches.  Given Firmino’s form, the pressure on Benteke increases even more.

2. Set pieces remain a concern for Klopp.

Liverpool has majorly struggled to defend against high balls especially corners of late. Though their backline comprises of four internationals, it’s very evident that as soon as a high ball is lofted in, the reds simply look as if they are about to crumble.  James Milner had just wasted a golden opportunity to double their advantage when Norwich profited from the visitors’ nervousness whenever the ball was sent in the air towards Simon Mignolet’s goal. It was their eighth Premier league goal that they have conceded from a corner, the worst record in the top flight.

3. Norwich still can’t defend

The ease with which Liverpool recovered from being  3-1  down to level the score at 3-3 and then take the lead spoke very poorly  of Norwich defense.  The manager has spoken frequently of the need to sore up the defense if they want to win games but  this is now four games in a row that the Canaries have conceded three or more goals. They should have secured the win once Hoolahan had stuck away the third. Yet both Henderson and Firmino were left completely unmarked for their goals. The nerves after that within the Norwich team were clearly visible and they duly collapsed  and lost the game 5-4
