According to a report in the Sun, Newcastle United are hoping to pen their golden boy Sean Longstaff to a long-term contract. The Geordie made 9 appearances last season and had a big breakthrough, which led to links with Manchester United during the entire summer transfer window.
The new wage that is being reported is £80,000 and this could be seen as a way in which they can keep for the long-term or the very least allow the Magpies to get a big fee if he ends up leaving St. James’ Park.
Longstaff is a very tidy player and is very similar in style to another Geordie in Michael Carrick. He retains possession very well as he’s two-footed, has a fantastic range of passing and reads danger very well, which is required of a midfield player.
With more top sides playing a 4-3-3, it’s important that there’s a holding midfield player, who is capable of receiving the ball to initiate attacks and Longstaff is very capable of doing it.
Longstaff is also very good at taking shots from range, which goes back to his ability to hit it with both feet. He’s also quite young, which suggests that he’s quite quick off the ground.
Newcastle need to keep him at least for another season as they were fantastic last season when he was in the side, beating the likes of Wolves and Manchester City when he played.
Newcastle will be looking to stay up and avoid relegation this season, instead of making inroads into Europe or any other big ambitions and keeping Longstaff will be key to what they achieve in the coming season.
The Magpies were a little unfortunate to not get a result against Arsenal in their first home game of the season, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring the only goal of the game.
Newcastle will be hoping that they can get some points on the board against Norwich City to bring some positivity as the club has been in a toxic state of affairs since Rafa Benitez’s departure in the summer.
