Manchester United opinion: Red Devils must go for Ruben Dias

According to a report from the Metro, Manchester United are interested in Benfica defender Ruben Dias. Ruben Dias, 22, is one of the most promising centre-backs in Europe and is already a league champion with Benfica.

He has already won 11 caps for Portugal and was voted the league’s Young Player of the Year in the 2017/18 campaign.

Given the Portugal international’s meteoric rise in the last couple of years, Dias would cost a fortune for Manchester United. But the Red Devils must not hesitate to pay the Benfica defender’s £52million release clause and sign him this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to significantly rebuild his squad after a torrid end to the 2018/19 season.

So far, United have only signed Daniel James from Swansea City and while the club has agreed on a deal with Crystal Palace for the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Wednesday, the club’s lack of ability to attract exciting players speak volumes.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer must push the club’s hierarchy to speed up their process of recruiting players before he heads out for the pre-season tour. One pressing area the United boss must definitely address this summer is the defence after his team conceded over 50 goals this past season.

Victor Lindelof has cemented his place in the first-team after showing signs of development this term and Eric Bailly could be given another season to prove his fitness.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are set to stay at Old Trafford after signing new deals earlier this year.

What United need is a reliable partner for Lindelof at the heart of the defence and Ruben Dias could be exactly that player for the Red Devils. Dias would surely be an upgrade on the likes of Smalling, Rojo and Jones, whilst improving United’s backline significantly.

The Portugal international is an excellent reader of the game and is rarely caught out of position. A ball-playing centre-half, the 22-year-old possesses the speed, technique and composure that was often lacking in United’s defence last time out.

A leader, great organiser and a vocal presence at the back, Dias is a player who seems to relish the traditional acts of defending – something Solskjaer’s side need from next season.

Also, Dias netted four times in all competitions for Benfica last term and goals from centre-backs are always precious, especially for a team like United that struggled to unlock opposition defences.

Verdict

Dias would be great value for money for United based on his current level of performances and upward trajectory. The Red Devils must not baulk at triggering his release clause, as the Portuguese has the potential of locking in his spot for the next decade or so at Old Trafford.
