Manchester United Opinion: Why Ruben Dias will be a solid fit for United?

Interim Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has transformed the club’s fortunes after replacing Jose Mourinho in December and now he needs to finish the season strongly and earn Champions League qualification.

The Red Devils are three points behind Tottenham and two points behind Arsenal, who occupy the third and fourth spots in the Premier League table after 30 games. Solskjaer has exceeded expectations as United’s interim manager and the kind of impact he has made since arriving at Old Trafford is incredible.

Key players like Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku have started performing consistently under the new management, leaving the Norwegian in a pole position to get the permanent keys of the club.

After years of misery at Old Trafford, Solskjaer will look to rebuild his squad in the summer transfer window. And according to a report from the Daily Mirror, the 46-year-old tactician has “ordered regular updates” on Benfica’s Joao Felix and Ruben Dias, as well as Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

Joao Felix has become one of the sizzling talents in Europe after making his name with Benfica this season. Felix’s teammate, Ruben Dias, has put in some impressive displays at the back which hasn’t gone unnoticed, with the report claiming he is valued at £50million.

United have markedly improved defensively under Solskjaer, whose emphasis on playing at the front-foot has given the defenders a lot of relief. Victor Lindelof has been a consistent performer at the back, this establishing himself as the first-choice central defender in the team.

But the Swede has lacked a reliable partner, with the likes of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones failing to bring consistency to their game. To solve United’s defensive conundrum, Solskjaer should make a summer swoop for Ruben Dias without any second thoughts.

The Portuguese, 21, made his Benfica debut in September 2017, having come through the club’s academy. He has played 25 league games this season, helping the club keep 12 clean sheets till date. Playing in the heart of the Benfica defence, he has been very vocal and commanding.

Dias is a fantastic organiser of the defence and is good at keeping his calm in testing conditions. The 21-year-old’s tackles and interceptions have made it very difficult for opposition teams to breach the Benfica defence. In a nutshell, he’s been the chief reason why Benfica are leading the Liga Nos table on goal difference.

Verdict

Dias would undoubtedly add quality and depth to United’s defensive ranks. He will make the United defence look more robust and composed by partnering alongside his former Benfica teammate, Lindelof.

The Portuguese starlet has got the potential to be one of the best defenders in the world. Hence, it’s a no-brainer for Solskjaer and co. to make Dias’ signing one of the priorities this summer.
