Why Manchester City should sign Juan Quintero for backup

According to a report in Manchester Evening News, Premier League defending champions Manchester City have held talks with Colombian midfielder Juan Quintero. This has been revealed by the player himself in an interview.

The player is currently plying his trade with River Plate in Argentina, on loan from Portuguese club FC Porto. He said in one of the radio channels that his agent has had talks with Manchester City and that it makes him proud. However, he insisted he won’t make a move unless the offer is right. The transfer window is open, hence, we cannot rule out any possibilities for the next three weeks. Here’s why City should sign Quintero sooner than later:

Quintero – An ideal backup

The Colombian possesses a tasty left foot that helped him to be one of the main stars for his country during the World Cup.

Juan Quintero

Everyone saw his talent on the ball and it is no surprise that a big club like Manchester City are in talks to get him.

The 25-year-old is chiefly an attacking midfielder but he is more than capable of playing on the right wing and as an attacking wide midfielder. Hence, he can play in both 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formations, the latter of which is used by Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

Quintero is one of those players who cannot be given an extra second on the ball, since he will punish the opposition. He has an excellent eye for key passes, threading those balls to set up goal-scoring chances for the forward runners. The Colombian has completed those passes at a rate of 1.9 per game in the Primera Division this season. (Whoscored.com)

He can also dribble in tight spaces to open up space for a shot or pass. The 25-year-old is not a very tall figure, enabling him to turn defenders on the spin with a low centre of gravity. All in all, he is a proper technical player with perfect ball-playing skills.

Juan Quintero

Manchester City already have an abundance of attacking talents on display, but getting a player like Quintero could bring something different to the equation. Guardiola can change his shape from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 at times to accommodate the Colombian and surprise the opposition.

He can also use the player in his orthodox, trusted formation as one of the attacking wide midfielders or as an inverted winger.

City are in a position where they don’t have to buy the 25-year-old but they should get him in order to add variety and that might be needed in this gruelling title race and a possible Champions League marathon.
