Man City plotting a January swoop for this 27-year-old summer target from La Liga would be a shrewd move

Why Manchester City should make a January swoop for Isco

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was interested in signing Real Madrid star Isco during the summer transfer window, but a move didn’t materialise.

Isco, 27, is into his seventh season with Real Madrid. He has scored 48 goals in 278 appearances and tasted rich success at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish international was frequently used by Zinedine Zidane in his first stint but with Real having added three more forwards this summer, his chances of playing regularly this season has diminished despite Marco Asensio’s injury.

Apparently, Isco isn’t one of the first names in the starting XI under Zidane and that should be enough for Manchester City to rekindle their interest and go for him in January.

Manchester City made a couple of smart signings in the summer, with Guardiola addressing the key areas of his squad by adding Rodri and Joao Cancelo.

Fernandinho, now aged 34, is at the twilight of his career and it was widely considered the right time to replace him and City did it with Rodri. Cancelo has arrived at the Etihad to compete and cover Kyle Walker, who was one of the club’s best players last season.

David Silva is set to make his 400th appearance for City in Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth, and what a career it has been for the Spaniard. He has been so important under each and every manager and has always managed to play his way into contention.

The ex-Valencia man is a vital cog of Guardiola’s system but the matter of fact is the Spanish maestro is ageing and has already admitted he’ll leave the Cityzens in 2020.

In Phil Foden, Guardiola and City have one of the best young English talents very much capable of stepping into the side following Silva’s departure next term. However, Silva’s exit means there will be big boots to fill into and there isn’t a better player than Isco to do so at City.

A quick, skilful and creative player, with excellent technique and ball control, Isco is one of the gifted playmakers currently in the game. The 27-year-old, known for his natural ability to pick a pass in the final third and glide past opposition players with utmost ease, can play in various positions across the midfield and attack.

The Spaniard compensates his lack of pace with his spatial awareness and dribbling skills, more than capable of creating things out of nothing for his team on the ball. Isco can unlock defences with one blink of an eye, have a pop at goal when space is provided and possesses the work rate to work for the team while defending.

Verdict

Therefore, it won’t be a bad idea for City to try their luck and sign Isco from Real Madrid in January. He would be the perfect replacement for Silva, whilst potentially increase Guardiola’s chances of claiming a hat-trick of Premier League titles.
