Why Manchester City should go all out to sign Rodrigo Bentancur

According to a report from Corriere dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester City and Barcelona have entered the race to sign Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Rodrigo Bentancur, 22, joined Juventus from Boca Juniors in 2017 and has made 76 appearances for the Italian giants in all competitions, contributing two goals and three assists in the process.

The Uruguayan made 40 appearances last season but he has fallen down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri, starting just three times so far this campaign.

That being said, Manchester City must go all out and beat Barcelona to the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur.

Manchester City signed Rodri Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in the summer as a potential replacement of Fernandinho. Rodri has settled down quickly at City, establishing himself a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side. However, the Cityzens are set to lose David Silva at the end of the season.

As such, it may be wise to look at further reinforcements in that position, especially a younger option who could compete with the likes of Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden.

Bentancur was hugely impressive for Juventus last season as they won their eighth successive Serie A title. He is a solid passer of the ball and boasts of 88.6% pass success rate so far this season, meaning he’s an effective player when in possession of the ball. [Stats Courtesy: WhoScored.com]

Verdict

Bentancur only signed a new long-term deal with Juventus over the summer, extending his stay with the Italian champions until June 2024. Nevertheless, Bentancur would be a good addition for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and they have to beat Barcelona to sign the Juventus star.
