Liverpool Vs Arsenal: Arshavin’s 4 Goals, Robbie Fowler’s Hattrick – Remembering The Best Clashes

Memorable Liverpool vs Arsenal moments

Liverpool travel to the Emirates to take on Arsenal in what will be surely be a great contest to watch out for. Both the sides have had splendid starts to the season with Arsenal being in pole position of the EPL table, whereas the reds from Merseyside in hot pursuit of the Gunners at number three. It has been almost ten years since the Gunners last lay hands on the famed Premiership title, whereas Liverpool haven’t won the same in almost over two decades.

Whenever these two sides have met, there has been high drama, emotion and swagger about the game till the final whistle. Even though both of the clubs’ reputation have taken a beating in the previous years, this fixture though has had everyone’s lip smacking and when they meet this Saturday evening, it’s going to be another cracker of a game given their already delightful start to the season so far. So here we at Soccersouls decided to provide our readers with some of the most memorable moments from this fixture over the last few years.

A Hattrick in Four Minutes and Thirty-Three Seconds:

Who would ever forget a young 19 year old Robbie Fowler sending shivers down the spine of the Arsenal by scoring what is still now perhaps the best Hattrick scored in the Premier League. The 1994-95 season’s sunny afternoon at a packed Anfield stadium will perhaps never be forgotten by both sets of fans, many of course more by the home crowd who later on proclaimed this young man as their God ‘Robbie Fowler’. A year later Fowler once again scored a hattrick and the 1995/96 campaign saw him score a staggering 36 goals and win the PFA Young Player of the Year award for a second consecutive year running. Quite Astonishing!

Continuing with Fowler, in the 1996/97 campaign, the Liverpool spearhead was in the news this time pleading referee not to give a penalty when he was tripped by Goalkeeper David Seaman at Highbury. The replays clearly showed there was no contact and Fowler did take the penalty but his weak shot was saved before a Liverpool player followed it in. As Liverpool won 2-1, Fowler earned a UEFA Fair Play award for his honesty. Unbelievable!

The 2001 FA Cup final will always be remembered for Micheal Owen’s genius. But many remember the game for the wrong reasons which I am sure Arsenal fans won’t ever be able to forget. Stephanie Henchoz deliberately used his hand to deny Theirry Henry a goal before Owen showed his magic.

However the best match for me has to be the amazing four all draw at Anfield in the 2008-09 season when Andrei Arshavin scored all of his team’s four goals in what was an astonishing, gut wrenching match on its own.

But if I had to pick the match of the lot it has to be the Champions League affair in a titanic quarter final tussle which saw Liverpool win 4-2 and 5-3 on aggregate. Who would ever forget that Theo Walcott’s run down the Anfield Road!
