Liverpool Transfers: 3 Reasons Why Missing Out On This Youngster Would Not Affect The Reds

Share

As the transfer window draws to a close, the frequency and outrageousness of transfers keep on increasing. One move that has been doing the rounds for well over a year now is the mooted Anfield return of Tom Ince. However, the latest reports from BBC say that, he is set for talks with Hull & Sunderland and here are three reasons why Liverpool have made the right decision by not bringing in Ince for the second time around.

1. Better targets available

Liverpool’s attack does need strengthening, and they have been linked with many top class attacking talents. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Yevhen Konoplyanka or Javier Pastore, the attacking players that have been linked with Liverpool in this window, are much better players with more experience than Tom Ince.

They have played at the highest level of European football and even though they might have failed to make a regular impact, in case of Pastore and Shaqiri, they’ll be better for that experience. Rubbing shoulders with some of the best players in the modern game will have only improved them as players, and they should be the sort of players Liverpool should be looking towards in a bid to improve squad quality and depth to make a sustained push for a Champions League spot.

2. Doubts over ability to step up to top level

Compared to Shaqiri, Pastore and the likes, who have played in some of the elite leagues or for top clubs, Ince has had his experience and performances in the Championship, the second tier of English football. Ince was let go by the club as they felt he did not have sufficient quality to make it to Liverpool’s first team.

While Ince has displayed outstanding determination and ability to give excellent performances for Blackpool in the Championship, there are serious question marks over his ability to make the step up and compete against the big boys. Liverpool should be wary of a similar buy in Iago Aspas who has failed to make the transition to a higher level of football at Liverpool despite being one of Celta Vigo’s best players and helping them survive relegation almost single handedly.

3. Need to focus on immediate needs

Even if we assume that Ince has sufficient ability and quality about him to be a success in the Premier League, he is not the player who will be able to come in and make an immediate impact for the first team. Liverpool already have a similar player in Raheem Sterling in the side and have loaned out Suso to Almeria for him to gain experience. Buying yet another similar player makes little sense.

There are other areas of the team that need strengthening immediately- the full back positions and defensive midfield spring to mind- and the money will be better spent there. Even if Liverpool do require an offensive reinforcement, it would be financially more prudent to recall Suso from his loan spell rather than spend £6-8m on a player who is still not the finished product.
