Liverpool: Three Cheap/Fabulous Transfer Options For Rodgers To Look Into (Food For Thought)

Share

Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV Eindhoven) £9 million

According to the Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is considering a move for PSV Eindhoven’s Georginio Wijnaldum, who has missed a large part of the season so far with a back problem but has since returned to score four times for the Eredivisie side. Wijnaldum, was rewarded with the captaincy at PSV, and is thought to have rejected a move to Arsenal during the summer, but with his current side struggling in seventh in the league table, the midfielder could be tempted by a switch to Anfield.

The Dutchman would solve the lack of width that currently plagues the Reds, with teenager Raheem Sterling the only winger in the squad. He would bring the necessary quality and experience to the squad that Sterling currently lacks, as well as better finishing. Capable of playing on either wing, his versatility would allow for a dynamic interchanging forward line that could be hard to defend against for most Premier League sides. A forward line-up consisting of Coutinho, Henderson and Wijnaldum would be a treat to watch for the Reds fans and neutrals alike.

Javier Pastore (Paris St. Germain) Loan

From being a promising youngster to yet another failed talent, Paris St. Germain’s Javier Pastore hasn’t exactly set the world alight in Ligue 1. He has struggled to get into the team on a regular basis and has managed just seven league starts and five substitute appearances this season. The Daily Star have linked Pastore with a loan move to the Premier League, and Liverpool have been rumored to be interested in the Argentine playmaker.

Brendan Rodgers’s could look to sign him on loan, with a summer transfer in case he’s able to adapt to life in the Premier League. While he may cost Liverpool upward of € 20.5 million in case they want to make the deal permanent, he has the creativity and drive to fill the hole that has been left by Steven Gerrard’s decision to drop into a deeper role.

Pastore has so far failed to score this season, but the midfielder has created (as per squawka) 10 chances and has an 83% pass accuracy to go with it. His pass length of an average 18m describes his eye for a long ball over the defenders head, which would certainly add a new flair to the Reds’ attacking threat.

Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid) Loan

Portuguese left-back Fabio Coentrao certainly looks a sorry figure at Real Madrid this season. Having gone close to a move to Mancehster United in summer, Coentrao has lost his place in the Real Madrid first team under Carlo Ancelotti, who sees Brazilian left back Marcelo as his first choice and the experienced Alvaro Arbeloa as his understudy. The £25 million purchase for Real Madrid reportedly had a deadline day loan switch to Manchester United fall through, and has subsequently been linked with a loan move to Chelsea in January, according to the Daily Mail.

The Reds are running short of option on the left side as injuries to Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan leaves them with on-loan Aly Cissokho as the only option. But Cissokho has horribly failed to impress, leaving Rodgers to sweat on a quality left back reinforcement. Liverpool could look at the Portuguese international in their search for a roving left-sided defender both adept in defense and attack, with veritable lungs of steel as well as a comfort in possession, and with suggestions that Coentrao may be available on loan this winter, he could also be within their budget.
