Liverpool Opinion: Why Liverpool should make a summer move for Manuel Lanzini

Premier League leaders albeit by one point, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have given Manchester City a fight that fans will remember for the rest of their lives. While Liverpool do look like title challengers at the moment, even Klopp will agree that they miss Philippe Coutinho’s creativity going forward.

The Brazilian, who left a little over a year ago for an incredible amount of money, was among Liverpool’s most creative players. A move for Nabil Fekir over the summer was supposed to be the answer to their problems but that did not work out (Telegraph), with the Reds pulling out at the last minute.

Things went from bad to worse when their second option – Manuel Lanzini – ruptured his anterior knee ligament (Telegraph). But having recovered, the 26-year-old has picked up from where he left off. The Argentine made his first appearance of the season against Fulham and while it was only a substitute appearance, he showed exactly what both West Ham and Liverpool have been missing.

At his creative best, the 26-year-old is unplayable and finished last season having produced 14 goals in all competitions. That’s more than every Liverpool star, barring Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and James Milner, with only Salah and Andrew Robertson assisting 8 goals this season.

It shows their main problem and while that’s unlikely to change at the moment, things could be different once the summer window re-opens.

Adding Lanzini would offer Jurgen Klopp another dimension to his style of play going forward. Not only that, the Argentinean’s work rate would be perfect for Klopp’s tactics. The 26-year-old’s ability to play in a deeper role will help Liverpool in the long term next season.

However, any move would mean that West Ham will ask for a king’s ransom, which may deter Liverpool since Lanzini has only just returned from a long-term injury. But in the end, a move will do nothing but add to Klopp’s current team.

While they might have other options via Nabil Fekir (Liverpool Echo) and Joao Felix (Mirror) among others, they will take time to adjust to the Premier League.

That’s something that Liverpool can’t afford – especially when they are challenging for the Champions League and potentially a league title again next season. But for now, Liverpool need to keep scouting the Argentina star and focus on using the players at their disposal to try and win the Premier League title.
