Liverpool simply cannot afford to miss out on signing this versatile 22-year-old with €50m release clause

Liverpool Opinion – The Reds should beat other big clubs to sign Junior Firpo

According to a report in ESPN (h/t AS), Real Betis full-back cum wing-back Junior Firpo has been a target of various clubs across Europe. Real Madrid are the front-runners, but Liverpool, Juventus, Manchester City, Arsenal and Barcelona are not far behind.

As per the report, the 22-year-old has a release clause €50m, that can be activated by any club this summer. His future is up in the air, even though he signed a new contract with Betis last August.

Currently, Firpo is aiming to get back to full fitness after recent hamstring issues that has kept him out of action. All the teams who are keeping track of him do need a left-sided defender due to one reason or the other.

Here’s why Liverpool should beat the others and sign the Spaniard in the summer transfer window:

The Reds have only one good option for the left-back slot

As of now, Liverpool have Andy Robertson and Alberto Moreno as the options for the left-back position. However, while the former has been terrific in the last 12 months, the supporting role played by the latter is close to non-existent.

Furthermore, Moreno has been an epitome of a rash player who gets caught out defensively far too often. His contract is up this summer and is close to joining Italian side Lazio.

Hence, it makes sense from the Reds’ viewpoint that they sign a new left-back/wing-back when the transfer window reopens. This is where the addition of Junior Firpo would be great to the team.

The 22-year-old can operate either at left-back, left wing-back or in central defence as well. Therefore, he can be a perfect backup and competitor for Robertson and also be an option to play in central defence.

All in all, Firpo is a quality player who has abundance of qualities at his disposal and his flexibility could be vital to this Liverpool team. Thus, Jurgen Klopp’s men must make a move to sign him before anyone else does.
