Liverpool signing this world-class Serie A star would be nothing but a waste of money by Klopp

Liverpool opinion: Klopp shouldn’t make a move for Kalidou Koulibaly

According to the Daily Star, it seems that Liverpool have joined the race for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly. The six-time Champions League winners had a rather wonderful season and are now looking to move on and bulk up their team.

That means adding reinforcements in the right areas and more importantly, the right players. It’s probably why Liverpool have been linked with Federico Chiesa, Ousmane Dembele, Ibrahima Konate, Adrian and a few others over the course of this summer window.

It’s been entertaining and at times, rather ridiculous, given the sheer talent that Jurgen Klopp has at his disposal. A project that has taken a little over four years, the German finally has his dream team.

With the impeccably brilliant Virgil Van Dijk in the squad, there is no reason that Liverpool need someone like Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 26-year-old is arguably one of the best centre-backs in the world, and if Liverpool didn’t have a certain Dutchman, then it would be different. But they do have that certain Dutchman and given that they both play as confident, dominating and quietly aggressive centre-backs, there is a big chance the two egos will clash.

It’s why Liverpool need to look elsewhere, maybe to a certain 19-year-old Ajax star or even the aforementioned Konate. This is because when paired with Virgil Van Dijk, either of the two would complete the tandem. But pairing Kalidou Koulibaly with Van Dijk only spells bad news.

Plus there is the added bonus that both struggle when played as a centre-back on the right-hand side. It’s why they are both played on the left and while that may not seem like too much in theory, on the field, being in the right place means everything.

Liverpool should look for someone malleable enough to learn from Van Dijk, and at the same time, be talented enough to be able to assert his dominance in the Premier League.

Someone talented enough to be a long-term option and someone big enough to make a splash and scare others into submission is the need of the hour. It’s a rather rare combination and one that isn’t found too often in the footballing world.

Conclusion

Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the best in the world right now and that’s why Liverpool cannot make the move for him. As centre-backs, there can only be one alpha, which is where the problem will arise in the first place.

Not to mention, the Reds already own an expensive centre-back and do not need another right now.
