Liverpool are back fresh after their UEFA Super Cup win in Istanbul over domestic rivals Chelsea. The game was won on penalties, thanks to back-up goalkeeper Adrian’s heroics after the game ended 2-2.
The Reds struggled for most of the game, especially in the first-half without Roberto Firmino, who went on to set up two of the goals and made a massive difference.
Firmino defends from the front, which is a big part of the build-up of this Liverpool side and they clearly look short of options up front when their main men aren’t playing.
They released Daniel Sturridge, who won’t be a massive loss in the larger context, but Liverpool should’ve had a replacement ready, which they could come to regret over the course of the season. One player who was linked with the Reds for a while was German international Timo Werner.
The forward currently plies his trade for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, who are known for bringing through some of the best young players in Europe. The 23-year-old is capable of playing anywhere across the front-line and is very accomplished at scoring and creating goals.
Last season, he scored 19 goals in all competitions and registered 10 assists as well. Leipzig also play a very high-pressing game like Liverpool and this would not be a problem for Werner to adapt to. He’d also be uniting with a fellow German in Jurgen Klopp, which would ease his adaptation to England and the Premier League.
Werner is very quick, two-footed, has a great defensive work ethic and can play anywhere across the front-line. All of these attributes make him a manager’s dream and he’d give a much-needed breather to Liverpool’s popular front-three of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
He’s also quite young and there’s always the possibility that a member of the front-three might suffer an injury and if Liverpool are to continue fighting on all fronts, they need someone with similar qualities.
Werner would also help Naby Keita revive his form, which saw him make the move from Leipzig to Liverpool. The two had a fantastic understanding during their time playing together. Werner fed off of Keita’s final passes very often and hurt the opposition effortlessly in the Bundesliga.
