Why Liverpool Should Not Sell Emre Can At Any Cost

The Vicarage Road witnessed a sensational goal on Monday night game between Liverpool and Watford. Liverpool’s German midfielder Emre Can came up with a mind-blowing overhead kick from the edge of the Watford box to put Liverpool one up on the night. That goal was enough for the Reds to take all three points and get closer to a place in the Champions League.

While Liverpool’s social media discussions were about how special and stunning Can’s goal was, there were many who pointed out that he is yet to sign a new deal with the club. The 23-year old will be out of a contract at the end of next season. Can joined Liverpool in the summer of 2014 for £10million.

Liverpool are desperate to keep him but Can and his agent are holding out on a weekly wage of £100,000. The fact that the Reds are now paying a similar amount for defender Dejan Lovren is making the fans go even mad. So, is Can worth £100,000 a week? Should Liverpool consider selling him?

To be fair to the club, they are looking at the likes of Naby Keita to add to the midfield which might increase the wage burden this summer but in the current inflated market, his wage should not even be up for discussion. Having played for Bayern Munich previously, Can is a gifted player who has some decent ball control. Though he is erratic at times, he is slowly finding some consistency and has been one of Liverpool’s best players in the last couple of months. He has 5 goals and 3 assists in all competitions this season and his goal against Watford was his second winner this season.

He is strong and athletic and though he needs to improve his concentration, he is a rare breed in world football at the moment. Happy to do the dirty work, Can is comfortable playing as a defensive, deep lying midfielder and is also adept at being a part of a midfield combination that drives itself into the opposition box ever so constantly.

Liverpool need more players like him who can add to both ends of the field. The lack of a defensive midfielder has cost them throughout the season and they seem to have found a solution in Can. His recent goal is probably his best moment in his football career but at 23, he will only get better.

He is a genuine midfield engine that can run the show in a Jurgen Klopp side and is just finding his feet in the Premier League. He will attract some interest this summer and it will not be long before Liverpool decide to pay him his fair dues. £100,000 a week should not stop Liverpool from tying him up on the long term.
