Leicester City opinion: The Foxes should sign Daniel Sturridge

According to reports in the Leicester Mercury, Daniel Sturridge has been linked with a move to Leicester City. Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers, has worked with the England international before, having had his best league season to date under the management of the former Liverpool manager.

The striker registered 22 goals and 9 assists in the 2014/15 season, forming a frightening partnership with Luis Suarez that got Liverpool very close to winning the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers has an exciting young squad with the likes of James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, Harry Maguire and Harvey Barnes. He will be hoping he can help incorporate Daniel Sturridge into the squad to add some experience and depth to the squad.

Sturridge hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons, coming off the bench on most occasions and failing to make a significant impact when he was offered a start. He only registered 4 goals and 2 assists in 27 appearances.

Despite that, he did show some of his quality when he scored a screamer from range against Chelsea and the opening goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League game at Anfield.

Rodgers will be hoping he can get more of those performances from the striker. Jamie Vardy has had yet another fantastic return, scoring 18 goals in the league, just 4 goals behind top scorers Mohammed Salah, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane. Vardy isn’t getting any younger and it’ll be important that there is a reliable backup.

Leicester want to make inroads into European competitions after finishing in 8th place this season. The club have been on the up ever since their miraculous league title win. Even making it into the Champions League quarter-finals in the following season.

The Foxes have had two pragmatic managers in Claudio Ranieri and Claude Puel. They finally have an attacking manager and have shown real promise in the last few months since Brendan Rodgers has been in charge.

It was on show in the win against Arsenal. The Foxes were a little unlucky to come away with a loss against Manchester City at the Etihad after a very impressive showing, where they went toe to toe with the Champions.

Conclusion

Daniel Sturridge needs to reinvent himself and Rodgers would be the ideal manager to help him do that, having helped him in a similar manner when the 29-year-old moved from Stamford Bridge to Anfield.

His Champions League medals will also help set the right example within the dressing room. This is a move that makes sense for all parties.
