Leeds Must Stop Chris Wood From Joining Everton

Genuine goal scorers are hard to come by in any division, so when you have found yourself with one, it goes without saying that you should do everything you can to keep hold of them.

In Chris Wood, Leeds United have a potential superstar in their hands.  To Leeds fans of course, he already is a superstar and in fairness his 27 goals in 40 appearances this season make Wood look like a genuine Premier League level striker. No one will believe in this more than the player himself.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City man is still just 25-years-old and arguably not yet at his peak in English football.  Figures of 8 goals in 31 games, 2 in 18 games and 13 in 37 games in the last 3 seasons before his current showing displays the clear upward curve Wood is currently on. And who’s to say his improvement has to stop there?  With this in mind, interest from Everton should really come as no surprise.

For their part, the Toffees are terrific at spotting talent from the lower divisions; especially the second tier.  Past signings such as Phil Jagielka, Joleon Lescott and Tim Cahill particularly stand out. Their acquisitions of such players like Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman speaks volumes about their scouting and so their interest in Wood is a massive compliment if not nothing.

Garry Monk’s side may well achieve promotion this season via the play-offs. However they have a 1 in 4 chance at best from this point and so the cruel truth is that they are more likely than not to be in the Championship again next season. If this is the case, then keeping hold of their best players is absolutely imperative. That fact is even more prevalent when you consider potential bids for hotshots Charlie Taylor and Kemar Roofe over the summer which may be hard for the owner to resist.

As if this wasn’t enough, one half of Leeds’ star centre-back pairing, Kyle Bartley is only at the club on-loan from PL side Swansea and so Leeds may yet find their squad utterly decimated if they aren’t careful.

Should Leeds stay in this division they should be attempting to be the next Newcastle United. By this, we mean a club from a big city ,with a big name, a huge stadium, a great fan base and a big history in the game. They need to be the side that wins on most weeks. In achieving that, they can most likely convince Premier League quality players to take the step down or in Chris Wood’s case, stay with the club for just one more year.
