In a fiercely contested Yorkshire derby, Sheffield United got the better of Leeds United 1-0 and overtook the Whites on the table. The Blades are currently second in the standings after that result, a point ahead of their rivals.
Chris Basham, who played as a makeshift midfielder today, scored the all-important winning goal for the visitors in the 71st minute.
Leeds had their goalkeeper Kiko Casilla sent off in the 91st minute when the Spaniard brought down Billy Sharp when the striker was going on goal unmarked by any defender.
The build-up to the United goal involved the slip of Liam Cooper, which allowed Sharp to setup Basham with a shooting chance 20 yards away from goal. And the latter did not make any mistake in tucking that in.
The home side created enough chances to get back into the game but the finishing wasn’t good. They had 17 attempts on goal, but none of them was on target.
Their best chance fell to Tyler Roberts but he hit the post from 15 yards out. On the other hand, Sheffield United had just one shot on target, that being the goal. They mostly played on the counter and did well in that aspect.
All in all, a fantastic result for the Blades as they continue their fine form going into the latter stages of this season. Their hopes of finishing in the top two is firmly in their own hands with eight games to go.
Here’s how their fans reacted after this monumental victory:
