Why Leeds United are right in signing Fraser Forster from Southampton

According to a report in Daily Star, Championship title hopefuls Leeds United are eager to finalise a deal for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster by the next week. The Englishman is out of favour at St. Mary’s under Ralph Hasenhuttl and Saints would allow him to leave during this month’s transfer window. The club paid £10m to Celtic to buy the player in the summer of 2014.

The 30-year-old used to be the number one for them but now he has been beaten to it by Alex McCarthy and now Angus Gunn. The Peacocks, who need a goalkeeper in this window, are looking to take advantage of this situation and make a swoop for the giant shot-stopper. (Daily Star)

Leeds’ need for quality in goal

With an injury to on-loan keeper Jamal Blackman, Leeds are down to one senior shot-stopper in their squad – Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The former is back at Chelsea, leaving the manager with no option but to stick with the latter, even if he doesn’t look too comfortable at times.

The Northern Ireland international has had an up and down season so far, producing an act of brilliance one moment and exposing himself to mistakes the other. The Peacocks are currently at the top of the table and are one of the favourites to win the Championship and get promoted to the Premier League. However, the stability between the posts is still the question that needs a solid answer.

Getting an experienced goalkeeper in Fraser Forster would come a long way in solving that problem, not just for the remainder of this season but also beyond that, as they potentially brace to play top-flight football after a while.

The 30-year-old is a giant of a goalkeeper whose height helps in covering the goal with ease when attempting a diving save. His height also aids in commanding the box from crosses.

He can tower over the forwards and defenders, pick the ball and start counter-attacks. The Englishman’s big figure enables him to become big to close down the target area for the attacker when there is a one-vs-one situation.

His distribution has been questionable at times but the former Celtic man is well capable of keeping the ball out of the net, which is the primary deed a goalkeeper should do. Hence, Leeds are right in getting him, to possibly put pressure on Peacock-Farrell or displace him from the number one spot if needed.
