Should Chelsea give John Terry, A New Contract?

Many senior Chelsea players have left the Stamford Bridge in recent seasons. The likes of Didier Drogba, Petr Cech and Frank Lampard have all left the Blues in search of greener pastures. Chelsea’s downfall this season cannot be put simply down to the departure of these legends, there is a much deeper issue which needs to sorted out, however, one can’t deny the loss of solidity and experience that the above-mentioned players brought to the dressing room. It is for this reason, the boardroom at Chelsea shouldn’t hesitate to offer a new contract to their captain John Terry even though he is on the wrong side of the 30’s.

The 35-year-old recently revealed his desire to earn a new deal after the 3-3 draw against Everton. Although Terry hasn’t been as solid as he was last season, where he played every minute of every game, it’s still clear that he hasn’t been the worst Chelsea player this season by far. If Chelsea were to offer Terry a new contract, the defender will need to be prepared to spend more time on the bench but given his leadership qualities and experience, an extension securing his services is truly a no brainer.

Now in his 19th professional season at Stamford Bridge, Terry carries plenty of baggage but it’s never stopped him hitting the heights as an uncompromising defender and inspirational leader. The old warrior is not influenced by those voices which call for his retirement, he knows that the speed in his legs is wavering slowly but every time he has been written off, he has bounced back strongly.

Terry has gone through some very rough patches, especially when Rafa Benitez was brought in as interim manager following Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking when it appeared Terry’s Chelsea days were finally numbered. The Spaniard believed that Terry wasn’t capable of playing two games a week but like always the former England defender bounced back under the reign of returning Jose Mourinho.

Right now it’s all about lifting Chelsea up the Premier League table but judging by the scenes after their draw against Everton two weeks back, it’s clear that there is no shortage of passion and emotion from the captain. It is why owner Roman Abramovich and the board need to offer Terry a new contract after the end of this season, even though it might be his last at the Bridge.
