After failing to win silverware last season, Manchester United are in dire need of making changes in the squad this summer. Jose Mourinho must assemble a team that can go on to challenge for titles in both domestic and European tournaments. And to successfully do so, the team should offload a few players to introduce some fresh energy.
United have quite a big squad and some of their current players will need to make way for the newer recruits. In this article, we will present a case as to why the Red Devils must offload the likes of Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini.
The English left-back had arrived among lofty expectations at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014. However, his career failed to take off and his performances in recent times have been far from decent. In fact, Mourinho has never been too impressed with the former Southampton player and has even criticized him publicly on numerous occasions.
It seems clear that Shaw has no future at United – at least not under Mourinho. Thus, it would make sense if Shaw was sold to free up funds for a new player.
Although Phil Jones was a constant fixture in Mourinho’s defence last season, the English defender is well-known for his inconsistency. Despite being at United for all these years, Jones has failed to establish himself as a solid player. Hence, Mourinho could certainly look for a better defender in his place.
Victor Lindelof, who had a nightmarish start to his career with the Red Devils, seems to be settling in and the Portuguese might take over Jones’ place in the starting lineup next season. On the flipside, Mourinho might even look for a world-class defender to partner Eric Bailly at the heart of the defence.
Fellaini’s contract is set to expire at the end of this month and perhaps it is time for United to let him leave. The Belgian midfielder isn’t the most skilled or technical player. On some days, he can work wonders in the midfield but then there are times when he goes completely invisible.
Whenever United need to play direct football, the player works well as a tactical option but surely the Manchester outfit can do better.
