Watford have made one of their best starts to a Premier League campaign under Javi Gracia this season. The Hornets are currently in 7th place and are making a push for a European spot given the way they’re playing.
The manager has certainly brought the best out of many of players since his arrival. Greek defender Jose Holebas has been a standout performer for the club this season. The 34-year-old has scored 2 goals and provided 4 assists in 10 appearances this season. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)
But given the Greek full-back’s ripe age, Javi Gracia has to bring in a replacement sooner than later. The manager should take a look at out of favour Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno.
According to ESPN, the Spaniard has attracted interest from former club Sevilla in the last few days. Liverpool confirmed that they would let go of the defender either for free or in a cut-price deal in January. Given the current level Andrew Robertson is playing in, there’s certainly no chance for him to make it back into Klopp’s plans.
Javi Gracia should capitalise on the situation and bring in the Spanish defender. He does look defensively fragile and goes out of position at times, but Moreno is definitely capable of fitting in at Watford.
Like Holebas, the left-back loves to maraud forward and is an adventurous player on the ball. He started his Liverpool career in bright fashion by daunting half the field before scoring against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 26-year-old has also got a mean left foot capable of producing thunderous shots, as seen against Spurs a few years ago. He also possesses immense pace that will allow him to seamlessly charge up and down.
On a countless number of times, Moreno has tracked back in time to cut out the counter-attacks. That is why he will flourish under Javi Gracia. The manager loves aggressive defenders who are also willing to support up front. The Spaniard is also capable of whipping crosses into the box and going for long-rangers when needed. He is also versatile enough to function as a left wing-back or as a left midfielder.
Though Sevilla are keen to bring back their former star, Javi Gracia should definitely beat the Spanish side to acquire Alberto Moreno. Holebas needs to be replaced soon given that he is already facing fitness issues. Moreno would be an ideal long-term option.
