Chelsea should not hesitate to part ways with Kenedy

According to the Daily Express, Chelsea winger Robert Kenedy is keen to complete a move away from the Stamford Bridge before the European transfer deadline on September 2, with the report suggesting that the 23-year-old Brazilian is not an integral part of manager Frank Lampard’s plans for the ongoing season. 

Kenedy featured heavily in the pre-season friendlies for the Blues under Lampard and was widely tipped to play a substantial role in the first-team this term but the manager has made it clear that he considers the versatile wide man as a fringe player only. (h/t Daily Express)

Chelsea, meanwhile, haven’t had the best possible start to their Premier League campaign under Frank Lampard, with the Blues accumulating just a solitary point from their fixtures against Man United and Leicester City. 

Lampard, though, will be hoping that his winless streak comes to an end when the Blues make the trip to Carrow Road to lock horns against Norwich City this weekend.

Coming back to Kenedy, the 23-year-old was named on the bench for Chelsea’s trip to Man United on the opening day of the season but he never entered the field of play and was omitted altogether from the matchday squad in last week’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City following the return of Willian. 

The Brazilian spent 18 months out on loan at Newcastle United in the Premier League under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez before returning to Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer for assessment by Lampard. 

A consistent run in the pre-season coupled with positive reviews from the manager handed him first-team hopes for the campaign ahead but Kenedy currently finds himself behind the likes of Willian, Pedro, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic in the pecking order for a spot in the eleven. 

Kenedy, who made his move to Chelsea from Brazilian outfit Fluminense back in the summer of 2015, made some sporadic appearances under former managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, whilst also spending time on loan at Watford and Newcastle United. 

The 23-year-old was used largely as a utility squad player at St. James’ Park last season and showed glimpses of his flair and potential, although that apparently hasn’t been enough to convince Lampard that he is capable of playing a big role in the first-team at Chelsea.

Now, with just twelve months left on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, Kenedy is looking to resurrect his career elsewhere, either with another loan move or a permanent one.

Chelsea, though, might want the winger to sign a new contract and then ship him out on loan in order to cope with the transfer embargo, as well as protect their investment. 

To put things into perspective, Chelsea need to keep hold of their existing stars due to the ongoing transfer ban but the departure of fringe players like Kenedy is unlikely to come back to haunt them too much. 

The 23-year-old has never really shown that he has the endurance to cut the mustard in a highly-competitive league, such as the Premier League, and the Blues should not hesitate to cash in on him this summer itself. 

Kenedy, although a versatile wide player with plenty of pace and trickery on the ball, seemingly lacks the ability and the X-Factor to make an impact on a consistent basis and a club of Chelsea’s stature in English football is unlikely to live with such deficiencies. 

Furthermore, the Blues already have plenty of resources in their wide attacking options and the Brazilian hasn’t shown enough to convince the club hierarchy that he is a player to watch out for in the future.  

Lampard already has some bright academy talents like Mason Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham to work with and it is not difficult to see that Kenedy is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
