[Image] Here’s how Rangers’ strong backline could look with two new signings in the team

New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has already brought in as many as six new players to Ibrox. Over the past week, the Gers announced two defensive signings in the form of Nikola Katic from Croatian side Slaven Belupo on a four-year deal, along with English centre-back Connor Goldson, who arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion after penning a four-year contract with the Scottish giants.

The defence was a huge area of concern for the Light Blues last season under both Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty. Rangers let in 50 goals in the Scottish Premiership, which was the most by any team in the top six. So, it was important for Gerrard to address the situation heading into his first managerial campaign.

And now that he has signed Katic and Goldson, here’s a look as to how the Gers’ defensive line might look with the two new players in the team;

Goalkeeper: Allan McGregor

There’s no taking away the fact that Wes Foderingham did a largely solid job over the course of the last season, but the return of veteran goalkeeper McGregor could see him yield his spot to the Rangers old boy.

Nikola Katic

Right-back: James Tavernier

The Englishman was one of the Gers’ best players last season and finished the 2017/18 campaign as captain of the team.

Tavernier’s prowess going forward from the backline is no hidden secret but he has improved the defensive side of his game as well. His partnership with Daniel Candeias down the right-side was one of the best aspects of this Gers side.

Centre-back: Nikola Katic

Katic, 21, has already made his debut for the Croatian national team in May last year which should be indicative of how highly-rated the defender is back in his homeland.

Tall and imposing, the youngster possesses good ground speed as well and has displayed great composure and maturity. An exciting addition to the Gers’ ranks, he has what it takes to establish himself as a defensive mainstay at Ibrox.

Connor Goldson

Centre-back: Connor Goldson

In Goldson, the Gers will be getting a modern-day centre-back, who is comfortable carrying the ball out from the back and has the range of distribution to start moves from the defence.

But at the same time, he possesses an imposing physical presence and a solid defensive nous, which makes him an exciting addition to the Gers’ backline.

Left-back: Declan John

Another big positive to come out of the 2017/18 season for the Ibrox outfit was John. The Welsh left-back impressed heavily in his debut campaign after arriving from Cardiff City last summer.

John finished the campaign with 3 goals and 3 assists from 25 appearances in the Scottish Premiership. His attacking intent and effectiveness down the left-flank was sorely missed by the Gers in the last few games when he was sidelined with an injury. John will have a major role to play for Rangers next season.
