[Image] 2 Ways in which Jose Mourinho could make use of his £66m new signings

Manchester United have managed to sign Fred for £47m and Diogo Dalot for £19m in the ongoing transfer window so far, and both players will strengthen Jose Mourinho’s squad to a great extent. After an underwhelming season, it goes without saying that United must make a solid Premier League title challenge next season.

With the new signings at their disposal, the Red Devils can improve their backline as well as the midfield. That said, let’s take a look at how United can line up with Fred and Dalot in the seasons to come.

Ideal formation: 4-2-3-1

Following the signing of Fred, Pogba will be given the licence to roam ahead. He should play as the attacking midfielder, which will provide him with greater chances of contributing to the movement up front.

With De Gea between the sticks, the defence is expected to comprise Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones/Chris Smalling and Ashley Young. While Dalot might not immediately start at the club, he should be an understudy to Valencia.

The midfield duo of Fred and Matic will ensure that the defence is protected.

As far as the attack is concerned, the trio of Pogba, Sanchez and Lingard/Rashford will press hard up front. Lukaku could continue in his role as the target man.

4-3-3

If United want to build the team around Pogba, this could be the ideal formation. However, it will require him to track back more often and fulfil his role as a central midfielder. The defence remains the same but in this system, Dalot could be utilised as a left-back.

The midfield will include Matic playing in the middle, with Fred on the right. Pogba should start on the left-hand side of the central midfield. To top it off, Sanchez and Rashford/Lingard will play slightly behind Lukaku up front.

Ideally, these are the two most realistic formations Mourinho can play with. The club are in dire need of playing an attacking yet exciting brand of football and these formations could bring the results that the fans desire.

This will be a make-or-break season for the Portuguese manager and it will be interesting to see how he fares.
