Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United away at St.James’ Park. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game to seal the three points for the Gunners.
In a game where both teams had chances, it came down to which striker was more lethal in front of goal. As it turned out, last season’s joint Golden Boot winner showed he is ready to fight for that prize this time as well.
During the first half, the away side had more of the ball, but both teams had equal amount of good opportunities to score. Magpies’ new signing Joelinton had a couple of good chances, but he couldn’t hit the target. Jonjo Shelvey then had an attempt tipped over the cross-bar by Bernd Leno.
In the 58th minute, right-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles won the ball higher up the field and delivered a peach of a cross for Aubameyang in the Newcastle box.
The Gabon international then showed his clever instinct and audacity to chip the ball over Martin Dubravka into the back of the net.
After that, Unai Emery tried to mix things up by introducing new signings Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe but it was Newcastle who pushed hard for an equaliser without really threatening the Arsenal back-line.
At the end of the day, it was a satisfactory win for the Gunners to start off the campaign. They would be hoping to build on this with tough games coming up this month.
Here’s how their fans reacted after the game:
