Three quality goalkeepers who could transform this Liverpool team into title contenders

An attack can win you matches and a stubborn defence can win you titles, but a fine goalkeeper can build a legacy for you. Over the past few decades, every successful team that has consistently dominated and ruled Europe has had a stellar shot-stopper in its ranks. Some of them are Petr Cech for Chelsea, Peter Schmeichel for Manchester United, Gianluigi Buffon for Juventus and Iker Casillas for Real Madrid.

Liverpool football club have built a reputation for having a dynamic, quick and dangerous attack along with a talented bunch of players in midfield in recent seasons. But, they have faced a lot of criticism and problems when it comes to their goalkeepers, namely Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius at the moment. The former was fantastic in the season under Brendan Rodgers where they almost managed to bring the PL crown to Merseyside but since then, he has been error-prone and has let his side down many times.

The Belgian has been under the hammer a lot of times and many want him to leave the club. Despite getting repeated chances, Mignolet hasn’t made up for lost reputation. Hence, with the January transfer window closing down on us and Liverpool planning to cement a spot in the top four, let’s analyse who would be a good replacement in goal.

Kevin Trapp

The German has been on Klopp’s radar for quite some time now as the Reds plan to snatch him from PSG. Trapp has been the second choice at the French capital, something that he certainly doesn’t deserve for the quality he possesses. He gets his big, strong hands at everything that is shot at him.

For a side like Liverpool that has shown signs of vulnerability in set pieces, Trapp seems to be the perfect tonic as his reflexes defy the laws of Physics at times. The 27-year-old knows how to stay calm and brush aside close range shots. If he ends up playing in front of the Kop, this would surely go down as one of the transfers of the season.

Joe Hart

The former golden glove winner at Manchester City has been discarded by his current boss Pep Guardiola as he chose the long ball way too often, something that didn’t satisfy the coach’s possession-based ideas. Even at West Ham at the moment, Adrian is preferred over him.

Joe Hart has the ability to make unbelievable saves; saves of the highest order. At 30, he still has a good 5-6 years left in him. In order to fight for the England No.1 spot, this could be the best option for the charismatic goalkeeper. Also to mention, Liverpool need a voice like his to organise the back four, lead the side and dominate proceedings.

Tim Krul

Highly experienced and full of quality, Tim Krul is an orthodox goalkeeper who has a textbook technique. The Dutchman has vast experience and is too good to be warming the bench for Brighton and Hove Albion. This is the right time for the 29-year-old to bring his career back on track. Neither was he preferred by Rafa at Newcastle nor is he by Chris Hughton here at Brighton. He reads the game well, makes all the possible routine saves and distributes the ball accurately. A big club move for this eminent player could work in his favour and Liverpool’s as well.
