Two Players Southampton can offload to raise funds for summer business

Southampton will be aiming to get back to their best after the club endured a dismal campaign last time out. The Saints were a whiff away from facing the drop, occupying the final safety spot on the table.

Southampton have done splendidly over the last few years but the club have lost a number of their top stars in that time. The Saints have shown the quality of their scouting department by bringing in excellent replacements. But the club failed to do that last year, which saw them endure a lacklustre season.

Manager Mark Hughes has already made a number of additions to the squad ahead of the new campaign. If Southampton are to get back to their best ways, the former Stoke City manager is going to need additional signings to bolster the squad.

But the Saints have already spent on bringing in the likes of Jannik Vestergaard, Angus Gunn, Stuart Armstrong, and Mohamed Elyounoussi. Mark Hughes would not have much funds left to spend and the manager is going to have to offload one or two players before the start of the new season.

Southampton already sold Dusan Tadic to Ajax for a reported fee of around £10million but the club are going to have to sell more to fund other transfers.

Here we take a look at two players the Saints could offload this summer in order to raise funds.

Shane Long

The Irish international wasn’t in the best of forms last season. He made a total of 30 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist.

That’s far too less for a striker playing day in and day out. Granted, Long was often rotated with Charlie Austin but the former QPR man scored 7 goals in 24 appearances.

With the arrival of Elyounoussi, Mark Hughes possesses enough depth in the attacking department. Manolo Gabbiadini also offers depth and cover. Long could fetch Mark Hughes a good sum given that the forward is experienced in the Premier League.

Nathan Redmond

Redmond made the move to Southampton from Norwich in 2016. He began in impressive fashion but he soon started to show signs of inconsistency. The midfielder made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring just 1 goal and providing 3 assists.

Redmond was mostly restricted to a bench role towards the end of last season. The former Norwich man could fetch a decent sum as well.
