Grealish and Whelan to start – Strongest 4-4-1-1 Aston Villa XI to face Wigan in the Championship

Predicted Aston Villa line-up to face Wigan Athletic in the Championship

Aston Villa began their season with a comfortable 3-1 away win over Hull City. The performance wasn’t too great but Steve Bruce must be delighted with the way his team played as a team and gutted out a vital win in the first game.

Playing at home against Wigan won’t be easy, and so the manager would want to keep the same line-up which performed appreciably to get the three points. So, the 4-4-1-1 formation should be in action for Villa this weekend.

Probable Aston Villa XI

Manager: Steve Bruce

Formation: 4-4-1-1

Jed Steer (GK)

Steer made one or two good saves in the first half against Hull City but was rather untested. He should be the number one for Villa this season.

Alan Hutton (RB)

Hutton showed great desire to move forward and help out the attack, which resulted in him getting a goal. He also defended well when required.

Tommy Elphick (CB)

Elphick was solid against Hull and expect him to be the main man in Villa’s backline this season.

James Chester

James Chester (CB)

Chester was a colossus at the back and should partner Elphick this season.

Neil Taylor (LB)

Taylor is a diligent player who is a perfect fit for Championship football, as he can run up the pitch and also cover the ground to track back when required.

Albert Adomah (LW)

Adomah is a winger who has the propensity to run at defenders and dribble past them. He will add that X-factor to the Villa line-up. He will be expected to do better on Saturday though.

Conor Hourihane (CM)

He is a trustworthy player in the midfield who will provide the base for the attackers to showcase their skills. Hourihane is clever in possession and defends the space well.

Glenn Whelan

Glenn Whelan (CDM)

The experienced midfielder is expected to shield the back-line and keep things ticking from deeper positions.

Ahmed Elmohamady (RW)

He scored against Hull on Monday but the Egyptian must improve his attacking side of the game to keep his place in the team for a longer time.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish (CAM)

Grealish thrived when on the ball, but unfortunately, his team couldn’t keep him in the game because of poor passing up front. He will be the key figure for Villa this season without a doubt.

Jonathan Kodjia (ST)

Kodjia was good in holding the ball up and running the channels. However, he needs to be in the box more to get at the end of crosses and score goals.
