Recently relegated and heavily debt-ridden Sunderland this week moved to dispel some of the doom and gloom around the club by attempting to sign Everton’s young duo Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway on loan for the season.
The club have completed the signing of Brendan Galloway and are close to signing Tyias Browning, and this shows the fans that they are definitely looking for promotion next season and are boosting their squad in order to achieve it.
Though both players have had limited game time at Goodison Park so far, both of them appear to be good signings for a Championship outfit as they have obvious talent. David Moyes would probably wish he had the help of his old club while he was in the hot seat too, though new man Simon Grayson will accept the two loan lads with open arms; no doubt.
Tyias Browning mainly plays as a defender; a right-back most of the time in fact, and has represented England from under-17 to under-19 level. He played under Simon Grayson at Preston North End last year and so knows the new gaffer well. But he only managed 9 appearances for Everton’s under-23 team in his two years there and has not been able to make an impact in his hometown yet.
Galloway, on the other hand, was given a little bit more of a chance by his parent club, making 19 appearances. But he made only 5 during a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion last season and just 3 of those in the Premier League. Making this move is wise for him as he will be certain that he can play at the top level. However, he needs pitch time to show off his skills.
Galloway is primarily a left-back and so it’s clear that Sunderland and Grayson have identified the full-back area as something they needed to strengthen immediately – a move which puts the futures of Billy Jones, Adam Matthews, Donald Love and former Everton man Bryan Oviedo in some doubt.
Given that they had cover in these areas already makes these signings a little strange to be honest. Other areas are clearly more pressing for Sunderland right now but at the same time, it’s nice to see them invest in youth. Clubs wishing to get out of this league need to show ambition and take risks. So bringing in two players who may yet go on to be Premier League quality looks like the right thing to do.
