Celtic should go for Breel Embolo when the January window opens
Celtic sold Moussa Dembele on the deadline day of the European transfer window to French club Lyon. As the deal was done so late, Brendan Rodgers’ men couldn’t buy a replacement for the Frenchman. The Hoops are competing on all fronts this season as always, and so they need squad depth to perform well in all competitions.
Currently, Rodgers has two strikers as options to deploy up top, of which Odsonne Edouard is absolutely out of form and Leigh Griffiths is struggling to keep his 100% fitness on a weekly basis. Hence, the Irishman would most certainly need reinforcements in the winter transfer window.
One player who can solve some of the problems at Celtic is Swiss winger Breel Embolo from FC Schalke. He has been in good form and is still 21, meaning he has the potential to become one of the best.
Rodgers is a type of manager who loves to work with young players and groom them to flourish as world-beaters. The manager can get a player who can not only fill in the gap in the squad but also score and create goals for the team.
Embolo is a versatile player in the sense that he can play on either wing or as a striker when required. So, he can be a very good team player, fitting where the manager needs him.
Taking an in-depth look at his stats from last season, Embolo scored 3 goals from 21 league appearances last season (12 from the bench). He is very good with the ball at his feet, dribbling past defenders at an average of 1 per game. (Stats Courtesy – Whoscored.com)
The 21-year-old’s defensive discipline when he plays on the wing is impeccable. He has a terrific pace to track the runs and support the full-back. On the flip side, his pace allows him to be a potent threat in counter-attacking situations.
All in all, Embolo has the attributes to become a lethal player for the Scottish champions. He is young and possesses scope for improvement, which Rodgers would love as he prefers to coach players into becoming better on a weekly basis.
In terms of depth, Celtic would get a fantastic talent if they go for him once the winter window starts. Overall, they must go for this 21-year-old prodigy.
