Why Swansea’s Alfie Mawson will be a brilliant signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers

According to reports, Premier League new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson.

Swansea City want over £20m for the 24-year-old, whose potential move to West Ham United appears to have hit a deadlock.

Mawson, 24, has been one of Swansea’s standout players over the last two seasons. He was a mainstay in Swansea’s side last term and although he was unable to save them from relegation, his performances were impressive.

Now that Swansea have endured relegation from the English top-flight, Mawson is expected to bid farewell to the Liberty Stadium. And Wolves must immediately splash the cash to sign him.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side ran riot in the Championship last season and deservedly won the division. Now Wolves are back in the Premier League but Santo should look for reinforcements to strengthen his squad.

Wolves have signed Willy Boly permanently after the defender mightily impressed in the Championship last season. However, Nuno prefers to play with three centre-backs and after signing Boly permanently, Mawson’s signing should be a priority for the Premier League newcomers.

On paper, this seems like an excellent deal since Mawson has risen admirably through the ranks. He has gone from being a League Two defender to establishing himself as one of the best young centre-halves in England. In fact, he played a major part in Barnsley’s promotion to the Championship a couple of seasons ago.

At Wolves, with skilled and talented players like Boly and Connor Coady by his side, Mawson should have no trouble fitting into the squad. The 24-year-old’s performances for the Swans saw him receive a call-up by England earlier this year but he remains uncapped.

Mawson would be a great addition to Wolves’ squad for next term and his partnership with Boly and Coady will be a mouthwatering prospect. A no-nonsense defender, Mawson is strong in the air and crunchy in tackling.

The English defender is robust and the fact that he has already shown promise in two Premier League campaigns adds greater value to his name. Also, standing at 6ft 2in, the 24-year-old can pop up with the odd goal which will add another threat to Santo’s side from set-pieces.

A calm and composed defender, Mawson has the vision, ability and technique to play out from the back and he rarely gets flustered under pressure. Despite all his attributes, he isn’t a finished article. However, with time and regular opportunities, the defender will mature and succeed in taking his game to the next level.

At around £20million, Mawson would be a quality signing for Wolves next season.
