Go for it Guardiola – Man City luring this Brazilian wing-back at the end of his current contract period will be a massive coup and here is why

Manchester City Opinion: Should Pep Guardiola make a move for Real Madrid ace Marcelo?

Manchester City are England’s strongest team in terms of their squad by an absolutely massive distance. All the second choice players in Pep Guardiola’s deep ranks will probably be able to challenge for the top-four as well.

Players like David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho were scouted and acquired at the perfect time and this has worked out well for them. More recently, the signings of Leroy Sané and Riyad Mahrez have showcased the gigantic ambitions of this City side.

They have spent unthinkable amounts of money to bolster most positions and the acquisitions of wing-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy can be seen as their most important signings from the last couple of transfer windows.

They are from a certain breed of full-backs who are as capable of attacking as they are defending. Kyle Walker was acquired from Spurs and has since become a first-team regular at the Etihad while the transfer for Frenchman Mendy has taken a whole different path.

While his attacking prowess is unquestionable, Mendy’s time with City has been riddled with injuries. He recently picked up a knee injury which kept him out for a prolonged duration. During this period, Pep was forced to play various players out of position to try and cover for this.

Midfielders Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph have both been utilised in this position while former Real Madrid right-back Danilo has also been used in this role on certain occasions. While this hasn’t affected them too badly, in a league as demanding as the Premier League, having a recognised alternative could be key.

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo is contracted to Los Blancos only until the end of the current La Liga campaign which means that any team interested in his services could be able to convince him to move on a free transfer.

Pep Guardiola must seize the opportunity to bring the talented Brazilian to the Etihad. At 30, he still has a few good years of top-level football left and given his pace and style of play, the Premier League would be the ideal destination for him.

His movement and crossing are renowned while he is also an excellent defender. His signing would reduce the pressure on Mendy. He would be able to alternate the defenders better between competitions and also get the best out of both of them.

Conclusion

While this move does seem unlikely to go through, the possibility of bringing the four-time Champions League winner to Manchester isn’t something that Pep Guardiola should ignore. While it is a long shot, it could turn out to be a revolutionary transfer.
