Sheffield Should Consider Signing These Championship Players In The Summer

Sheffield United will be back in England’s second tier next season, but the question is if they can be competitive?  Their ascent to this division seems to have been a long time coming and it seems the foundations are there for the Bramall Lane side to have a decent stab at the league.

Money should be available to strengthen the squad in the close season and here we look at two players already playing in the Championship who would be realistic, yet ambitious targets for the Blades.

Angus MacDonald

Even at 24, MacDonald’s profile has the journeyman look about it. Including loans, he has had playing time at Basingstoke, Torquay, Wimbledon, Salisbury and now Barnsley, having started out at Reading as a youth player.  He has just been learning his trade though and has now reached a level where has been entrusted with 33 games in the Championship as a centre-back.

He looks a proper player at this level now and despite Barnsley’s good start to the season, losing Winnall, Hourihane, and Armstrong will put them back down a level or two. With this in mind, former top level regulars Sheffield United would look like a very attractive proposition for MacDonald and so a hop across South Yorkshire would not be a bad move.

Jackson Irvine

Another 24-year-old currently plying his trade in the Championship. A solid defensive midfield player, Irvine has played 36 games in the league this season for Burton Albion and has been credited as the reason for why they are not at the bottom of the division where many of them expected them to be.

In this case, the potential stumbling block would be money. Irvine has only been at Burton for a year having signed from Ross County of the Scottish Premiership. Albion will feel they need to make a hefty profit on the player if they are to risk letting him go, so Sheffield United would certainly need to splash the cash to get his signature.

If they do go down that route, it might well be worth it. Sound defensive midfielders are a valuable commodity, so even paying what may seem like a large fee would be good business for Sheffield United. They need to land this type of player if they have ambitions to go straight up and challenge for the play-offs.

They may only be a couple of players short of providing city rivals Sheffield Wednesday with a good battle next term and these guys could be the ones to help them achieve it.
