According to a report in the Sun, Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce is all set to launch a desperate S.O.S (Save our Season) to former Chelsea and Villa defender John Terry in a bid to persuade him to come back to the Villa Park. Bruce wants the new owners to sanction a dramatic return for the veteran defender, as his team look defensively weak.
Terry played 36 games for Villa and captained the team which lost the play-off final against Fulham at Wembley this May. After a promising start this season, they have slipped up massively, dropping down to 12th position in the table. The 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Sheffield United on Saturday seems to have alarmed Bruce and Villa fans that something is not right in the team.
Villa have only kept one clean sheet this season – against League Two side Yeovil Town. So the situation is quite bleak at the moment, and that calls for an experienced head in the dressing room. Here’s why Terry’s inclusion would bring stability and security to the club’s defence.
If one goes through John Terry’s CV, it is full of medals and fantastic defensive performances. At 37, he may not be as proficient as he was at his peak, but he still possesses the talent to do a job which is direly required at Aston Villa.
Perusing through his stats from last season, the veteran has some very impressive numbers. He had a tackle and interception rate of 0.8 and 1.5 per game respectively, making an average of 0.8 blocks. Terry is good in the air, and won 2.7 aerial duels per game to dominate centre-forwards with ease.
Hence, it is safe to assume that the 37-year-old can still do a good enough job to resurrect a defence which looks lost of ideas at the moment.

There is a very catchy phrase – “desperate times call for desperate measures”. This is the exact situation at Villa, where the club is in disarray. So the move to bring John Terry back to the club could work well for Steve Bruce.
