Rangers beat 10-man Aberdeen 2-0 via two penalties from James Tavernier and stopped Celtic from winning the league this weekend. This win keeps the gap to nine points at the top, with three games to go. The Hoops will have their chance to seal the title next week before the Old Firm Derby.
Steven Gerrard’s men were given the penalty in the 48th minute when Lewis Ferguson was adjudged to have fouled Nikola Katic. Tavernier then slotted his spot-kick on target to give his side the lead.
The second goal came in the 84th minute when Andy Considine lashed out an arm towards Katic in the box. Even though the contact was minimal, it was enough to warrant a penalty. Tavernier stepped up again to score his 14th penalty of this campaign.
Rangers dominated possession in the game and created chances of note. Jermaine Defoe couldn’t manage to keep his effort down from close range, while Tavernier scored from open play but the goal was adjudged offside.
Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis made a string of decent saves to deny efforts from Defoe, Tavernier and Steven Davis. Conor Goldson had a great chance but he headed his chance over.
Hence, on the balance of play, the Gers deserved the win. This result also confirms that they will finish second in the table for the first time since 2012.
