According to Scotsman, Scottish giants Rangers are setting their sights on making a move for free agent Matty Willock, who was with Manchester United till this summer. He is now being released by the Red Devils.
The 22-year-old has had loan spells up until the end of last season to various clubs across England and Europe. He also played for St.Mirren and St.Johnstone, hence, stating his experience in Scottish football.
Rangers are into their second summer window under Steven Gerrard and enhancement of the quality of the squad is paramount ahead of the start of next season.
Talking about shrewd business, the Gers have already signed free agents Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones. Now, they are eyeing towards Willock, formerly of the great Manchester United academy.
Here’s why signing the 22-year-old won’t really increase the qualitative strength of the squad:
Make no mistake, Matty Willock is a fine midfield player, who despite not getting a chance in Manchester United’s first-team, has shown that he could one to look out for in the future.
Predominantly a central midfielder, the 22-year-old can play in defensive midfield, attacking midfield or as one of the box-to-box midfielders. He has all the tricks in his game to showcase on the big stage.
However, if we look at his performances in clubs where he played on loan, the only complaint is that he is too inconsistent and shows his potential without much regularity.
While Rangers could ill-afford to sign a player who may not really enhance the quality of their squad, they already have quite a lot of very good players in central midfield positions (especially after the additions of Hastie and Jones).

Hence, in a way, Steven Gerrard’s men signing Willock would only help them in adding numbers to the squad, but not really aid them in terms of adding that X-factor to their midfield department.
