Four Things We Learnt From The Midweek Games In EPL: Liverpool And Tottenham The Big Winners

Yet another tipsy, topsy, gut wrenching, lip smacking action saw the Premier League teams battle it out in Gameweek 26 barring a couple of games which were suspended thanks to the incremental weather conditions. While Chelsea’s run of form was halted by an impressive West Brom outfit, Liverpool fought their way back to clinch the tie at the death at Craven Cottage while Arsenal missed a plethora of chances as their clash against Manchester United resulted in a goalless stalemate. Here are the four talking points from the midweek action form the Premier League.

Liverpool are title contenders, really?

Even though Brendan Rodgers claims the Reds from Merseyside are not title contenders, the Irish feels his team is the Chihuahua running beside the big guns in a race to the finish. The manner in which Liverpool came back twice to win their encounter against Fulham away at Craven Cottage epitomised everything that is  right within the squad. Rodgers rightly said,

“I said to the players these are the games where you arrive in the Champions League – games like this here. You’re playing a team who are fighting, trying to stay in the division. We’ve come off the back of a brilliant performance at the weekend and tonight we’ve again got another three points in a different way. So it really shows that this team has improved in every facet of the game.”

The Merseysiders are currently fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Chelsea and just a tad behind Arsenal and Manchester City in the table but can they realistically snatch the title? We shall all wait and see.

Juan does not Mata if United play likes this:

The build up to the Emirates game between United and Arsenal was labelled as the clash of the game week but it hardly lived up to the expectations.  Both the teams grinded out a sour stalemate as United now find themselves eleven points away from the last Champions League berth and their hopes seems to wither away with each passing game. However the most concerning for David Moyes was how Juan Mata played throughout the entire course of ninety minutes. The record signing failed to invigorate any United build up or create chances as the Red Devils squandered yet another two points against the Gunners.

The way United played against Fulham was simple unacceptable. When you have players in the likes of Rooney and Mata in the middle of the park, there is no need to put in 81 crosses in a single game.

Adebayor the man for Sherwood’s hunting spree:

Tottenham’s resurgence following the unceremonious sacking of Andre Villas Boas has been nothing short of unbelievable. Head coach Tim Sherwood has brought back discarded striker Emanuel Adebayor back from wilderness and the Togolese striker has returned the favour with eight goals from the last ten games. Adebyaor’s incredible performance ensured Spurs are on the climb and are currently fifth on the table after a 4-0 demolition of Newcastle at Sports Direct Arena. Can Tottenham’s man on fire  reignite the dying embers of their own for unlikely Champions League berth.

Roundup: Southampton win again as Swansea play out a draw at Britannia:

The Saints took advantage of a fatigued Hull City side albeit a second-half strike by Jose Fonte that needed a green light from goal-line technology to be given gave all three points to Pochettino’s men. Fonte bundled the ball over the line at the second attempt in a goalmouth scramble in the 69th minute as the Saints are currently width on the table and looking to make Europe a realistic opportunity. Swansea meanwhile drew against Stoke as Chico Flores struck the equaliser after Peter Crouch had given the home side the lead at the vociferous Britannia.
