Forget Sessegnon – Why Tottenham must sign this £35m Brazilian speedster instead

Over the course of the last season, Ryan Sessegnon emerged as one of the brightest talents in England. His exploits in the Championship fired Fulham to a promotion to the Premier League and now, it will be interesting to see how the teenager fares in the English top-flight.

Due to his sensational performances, Sessegnon will come across as a worthy prospect in the ongoing transfer window. In fact, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly lurking for a possible move.

Sessegnon is an impeccable talent and his strength lies in his versatility. Attack-oriented by nature, the youngster can play anywhere on the left side. He is primarily a left-back but has displayed exceptional skills while playing on the left-wing.

Slavisa Jokanovic even utilized him on the left side of the midfield on certain occasions and the player never disappointed. Hence, Spurs’ interest in him is understandable but as far as Fulham are concerned, they should fight tooth-and-nail to retain his services.

The situation can go two ways: Fulham could either agree to a sale by commanding a sky-high fee or Tottenham might have to go home empty-handed.

Thus, it would be better for Spurs to leave Sessegnon alone for the time being and focus their attention elsewhere. FC Porto’s Alex Telles has attracted a fair amount of attention as well and perhaps Mauricio Pochettino should consider a move to sign him instead of Sessegnon. The player has a £35m release clause.

Telles joined Porto from Galatasaray in 2016. Since then, he has gone on to blossom into a fantastic player. He is quite similar to Sessegnon with his ability to contribute to the attack while fulfilling his defensive duties at the back.

In fact, Telles played a vital role for the Portuguese giants as they secured the Primeira Liga title last season. Given his track record, skills and power, Tottenham could greatly benefit by targetting him this summer.

Furthermore, Sessegnon seems to be more suited to playing the role of a winger. He may have started out as a defender but clearly, his attacking skills are far sharper than his defensive capabilities. And it would be a shame to restrict such a talented star to a role at the back.

Sessegnon would be able to make this transition effectively at Fulham but he is unlikely to receive such opportunities at Spurs. Hence, Tottenham must abandon their pursuit of the teenager in favour of the Brazilian.
