Forget Jorginho – Here are 2 top-class alternatives who Man City could target including La Liga midfield engine

Share

Napoli’s Jorginho was one of the key players for the Italian club in a season where they played some of the most attractive football across Europe.

The pass-master ran the show for Sarri’s team from the midfield with his excellent range of passing. Understandably, Jorginho is among the most coveted properties in the summer transfer window of European football.

According to Daily Mail, the Italian midfielder is on the radar of Manchester City, and Pep Guardiola is keen on the player. With Fernandinho not getting any younger, the Spanish coach is believed to be looking to upgrade his defensive midfield by signing Jorginho.

But, what if Manchester City fail to secure Jorginho? Here are two exciting options who would fit well in Pep’s system:

Julian Weigl

At an age of 22, the German is already among the most accomplished defensive midfielders in world football. Wiegl, who has been a regular fixture in Borussia Dortmund’s midfield for years, ticks all the boxes for a midfielder needed in Pep Guardiola’s team.

Julian Weigl

Julian acts as the perfect anchorman who pulls the strings from deep while shielding the backline. Even at a young age, he is a picture of calm and composure with the ball at his feet.

An average pass length of 18+ meters this season suggests that Weigl has the ability to set the tempo of a match at his will. Julian also possesses great tackling ability and positioning sense which enable him to protect his defence.

Weigl’s playing style is similar to Sergio Busquets’ and there can’t be a bigger compliment that can be lavished on a young midfielder.

Steven N’zonzi

Not the most flamboyant name in the transfer market but certainly among the most effective ones in his role. N’zonzi is the ultimate no-nonsense defensive midfielder who keeps the ball ticking for his side. The former Stoke City man is a player who likes to keep it tidy and simple in the middle of the pitch.

Steven N’Zonzi

His impressive 88% pass completion rate with Sevilla this season underlines his immense passing ability. While being technically adept, N’zonzi’s giant frame helps him in winning almost everything in the air.

For a man who is 196 cms tall, N’zonzi is also very quick and capable of making those crucial recovery runs from the midfield to help out the defence.

N’zonzi has been linked to a return to English Premier League for a long time now with clubs like Arsenal also showing interest in his services. Manchester City should target him too.
