Chelsea’s pursuit of Everton’s John Stones seems to be hitting a stumbling block with the price for the young defender. Chelsea have had an offer of £26 million rebuffed by the Merseyside club and they want more if the Blues want to sign Stones away from Everton. Chelsea normally get the man they want, and money is never an issue for them but spending this much on a player who had a decent season for Everton surely begs the question, why don’t Chelsea target someone else?
In this day and age of global scouts and constant reports on players, we look at 3 young central defenders who could do the job for Chelsea and could cost way less than Stones.
Eric Dier
The 21-year-old might be a tough signature to get since he is from a rival club but Dier has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and was a star performer for Spurs last season. The youngster can play both as a right-back and centre-back which would make him an attractive option for the likes of Jose Mourinho, case in point being the use of Ivanovic from a centre-back to one of the best right-backs in the world. Would Tottenham want to sell their rising star to a rival? Probably not, but then again, Everton are willing to sell Stones for the right price, so you never know.
