Should Barcelona Go For Angel Di Maria This Summer?

Fresh reports in Spain have emerged that Barcelona have re-ignited their interest to sign Angel Di Maria after the rumours that he has been unhappy in the French capital for quite a while now. With Arda Turan almost set to leave the Camp Nou, a place in the squad would open up, which can be filled by Angel Di Maria, with his international teammate Messi trying to persuade him to Camp Nou.

Di Maria is a well-known name in the Spanish league having made a name for himself at Real Madrid where he was one of the star performers during his successful stint at the Bernabeu.

He has been enjoying his football at Paris Saint-Germain of late after a difficult spell at Manchester United, where he just couldn’t settle in. He was later sold by Van Gaal after just one year at Old Trafford.

He scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists in 43 appearances for PSG in the recently concluded season, making it a decent campaign for him personally.

Di Maria spent four years at Real Madrid and would belong to the rare set of players to play for both Real Madrid and Barcelona should he join the Catalan side this summer.

Even though signing up Di Maria would strengthen their squad massively, Di Maria would have to work harder than ever to earn a place in the starting XI as he is a winger. Barcelona have the best wingers in the world right now, with Messi and Neymar deployed on the flanks. Replacing them would be an uphill task. Either that, or the only choice he would be left with would be to shift to a central position which he hasn’t mastered yet.

The transfer, if it happens, wouldn’t just be a waste of money for Barcelona but also be a career defining choice for Di Maria. He just cannot give up first team football to be a namesake part of one of the top teams in the world because in the end, it isn’t going to be helpful.

Di Maria and Barcelona Should avoid each other at all costs if they are to stop themselves from causing damage to each other. This is not a feasible move tactically, and also financially. Di Maria is someone better than being just a mere backup player, and hence he should not join Barcelona in the summer.
