Forget Coleman – Here Are 3 Alternatives Manchester United Should Look To Sign This January

Share

It’s already a known development that Manchester United chief Jose Mourinho is interested in landing Everton right-back Seamus Coleman come winter. But there is a huge doubt looming over the transfer given how vital the Irish has been to Koeman’s defence.

The Dutch watched helplessly as Manchester City lured Stones away upon his arrival at the Goodison Park dugout. Chances are he’d put up a fight to prevent Jose from wrestling the veteran full back away from Merseyside, even if it’s for the purported £16million or more.

Provided Manchester United don’t come out tops of this battle, here are 3 alternative right-back targets that could be pursued instead.

João Cancelo

The 22-year-old Valencia right back will be a perfect fit for Manchester United. Having finally established himself as a member of the La Liga’s side starting XI upon his arrival from Benfica 2 seasons ago, Cancelo’s performances earned him a national team call-up during the September international break.

And he not only put in great efforts in all 3 World Cup qualifiers he has appeared in, he also got a goal in each game. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been alerted due to his quality and are planning on raiding the club for the services of the Portuguese.

In all his 7 league games thus far, he has won 8 tackles, made 12 interceptions and 5 clearances. A good dribbler and also defender, Cancelo has no known weakness as he is able to turn in brilliant performances over and over.

Serge Aurier

The PSG defender is one player who could be easily lured to Old Trafford for many reasons. The Ivory Coast international continually gets into trouble in France and could do with a change in environment to save his young career. That apart, the PSG project looks to be crumbling.

Not only is the club’s chances of getting anywhere near the Champions League trophy very slim, a league title could elude them after many years of dominance. That reality might become glaring by January, prompting Aurier to consider a move away.

The 23-year-old is not only a worthy competition for Valencia, or a great alternative to Coleman, he is also a long-term option. He isn’t just lethal with his pin point crosses from the flank, Aurier is a great tackler who has averaged 3 defensive actions in the league this season and won an average of 62% of his duels. In just 2 Champions League games, the athletic African star has won 3 tackles, made 4 interceptions and had 6 clearances.

Sébastien Corchia

The 25-year-old Lille right-back is regarded by some as the best in his position in France having turned out impressive performances for the club since arriving from Sochaux 2 seasons ago.

In 8 Ligue 1 games this term, Corchia has made 15 interceptions, 20 clearances and 3 blocks. He has also won 14 tackles with a 48% success rate. Despite standing at 5 ft 9 in and likely to come 2nd in aerial challenges, he has recorded an average of 53% wins in duels contested.

The former France youth international has been the only positive thing about Lille’s woeful start to the season. His major strengths include his crosses, long-range shots, blocking the ball and a great all round defensive contribution backed by his ability to maintain concentration all the time. He will no doubt be a great addition to United’s ranks.
