Forget Attackers: 3 Defenders Wenger Should Look To Sign This Summer For Arsenal

Share

Arsenal finished last season on the second spot, hence missed out on a great opportunity to end their Premier League drought last season but Wenger has been working hard this summer to plug all the gaps in the squad and mount a proper title challenge next campaign. The priority will be bringing in a world class striker who can provide 20-25 goals per season on a consistent basis. However there is also a need to look at the defense. We know that Laurent Koscielny, Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal make up three of the first-choice back four. Both Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacket have been unable to cement their spot in the starting XI and have been in and out of the team recently.

Arsenal also have Calum Chambers on their pay roll, however the English defender has gone off the boil following his bright start at the Emirates Stadium. There is also the curious case of Mathieu Debuchy, who despite being currently crocked, will most likely find a new home in the coming two months. There is a need to bring in a squad utility player, who can play in a variety of roles.

Carl Jenkinson is back at the club but his knee injury, and the fact that he’s probably not good enough for Arsenal, means that he’s not really the answer. At left-back Kieran Gibbs future is still not certain, he might ask for a move away. He’s too good to be sitting on the bench and, at 26, his priority will be getting more playing time.

Here are the three defenders who Wenger could sign this summer.

Medhi Benatia

Benatia has struggled to remain in Bayern Munich’s starting XI last season.  He was plagued by injuries all season, which resulted in the Moroccan international managing just 24 Bundesliga starts since joining the German giants in 2014.  His injury record might be cause of worry, but there’s no doubting his talents when he is on the pitch.  The well-rounded former Roma player would be a welcome addition to the Gunners squad, and with Mats Hummels being brought into Bayern, there may not be room for Benatia in Bavaria.

Martin Skrtel

The Slovakian’s departure is imminent currently, although it’s something that will not please the Liverpool fans, who she him as rock in the red defense. He might not be rated amongst the best defenders currently playing, but Skrtel is far and away the best defender currently at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal. The Gunners are crying out for a figure at the heart of their back-four who lists defending as his number one attribute. He will not only provide solidity to the team but will be leader at the back, something Gunners urgently need given some of the meltdowns they have suffered in big matches.

Virgil van Dijk

The Netherlands international has been a smash hit since arriving on the south coast last summer, and would fit seamlessly into the Arsenal starting XI.  The north London club have looked inept at defending balls in the air lately, and van Dijk’s best attribute is his aerial abilities. The St Mary’s club would demand a chunky profit on the £13m they paid the Scottish champions for Van Dijk. When
