Food for thought: This 30-year old out of contract star could turn out to be a brilliant signing for Arsenal

With the summer transfer window up and running, there have been numerous bizarre rumours floating around. But if a report from the ESPN is to be believed, it looks like Arsenal are harbouring an interest in Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgian’s contract will expire at the end of this month, and he is yet to sign a fresh deal with the Red Devils. Considering the fact that the Gunners stand a chance of landing him for free, should they go for it?

Fellaini is quite an eccentric player and often struggles to put in impressive displays on a regular basis. Since Jose Mourinho took charge of Manchester United, Fellaini’s displays have been erratic.

On his day, nobody can dominate the midfielder, and his marauding runs often lead to goalscoring opportunities as well. In fact, the player is well-known for his ability to bulldoze past opponent defenders to find the back of the net.

And from what we have seen of his performances so far, it is safe to state that Fellaini can do the dirty work in the middle of the park too. Over the years, Arsenal have lacked a midfield enforcer – somebody who can go out and make things happen.

Granit Xhaka’s performances have been sub-par, and it goes without saying that the Gunners lack quality in that particular department. As far as Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny are concerned, they lack the kind of physicality that is often seen in Fellaini’s game.

Fellaini is unpredictable but in the right circumstances, he can thrive. The former Everton star is excellent when it comes to shutting down the opposition, and his height often provides added advantages for his team.

Emery could choose to deploy him in a three-man midfield along with Xhaka and Ramsey. In doing so, Fellaini can protect the back line, thus allowing Ramsey to adopt a more advanced role.

Fellaini, who is adept at tackling, would also be a brilliant impact substitute for the north London club.

Since Olivier Giroud’s departure to Chelsea in January, Arsenal have lacked a player who can just come in and score goals towards the end of the game. And Fellaini possesses all the qualities to do just that.
