Five things we learnt from the Premier League Weekend

Yet another excruciating weekend in the Premier League is a foregone conclusion, with easily some biggest losers and winners coming of clarity. Gameweek 22 brought the best and worst in England’s top tier football with all of the big boys Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea winning. Tottenham’s resurgence continued, Newcastle’s imperious run of form was truly on showcase but there were no such joys for Liverpool or Manchester United. Southampton lost their lead twice to Sunderland in what was a classic while Swansea lost again plus the battle for relegation is really on the flames. Here are the five things we learnt from the Premier League Weekend.

1. Newcastle United are having a ball but not Sam Allardyce

Alan Pardew’s men are eighth on the table, a point behind Manchester United and seven points off the final Champions League spot. Yet another victory at Upton Park enabled the Magpies to continue their brilliant run of form, thanks to a double from Yohan Cabaye and the other by Loic Remy. Newcastle were so dominating in front of the Hammers, that Sam Allardyce had a tough time to save his face from the ignominy of disdain. Is Big Sam the next manager to get fired? Surely, Football never cease to bore us.

2. Chelsea are the only one who can stop City from winning the title

Samuel Eto’o clinical hattrick ensured Chelsea beat Manchester United by a 3-1 margin as David Moyes’ side went down sluggishly yet again. Jose Mourinho became the fastest Premier League manager in history to notch up 100 wins at home in 142 games, eclipsing Sir Alex Ferguson who reached the feat in 162 games. If we are to go by stats, Manchester City look the safest bet to win the title, this campaign, but I believe that if there is any team who can stop the Blues from Manchester, its the Blues from London. This just provides the topping on the cheese for third February’s epic clash between the two teams at the Etihad Stadium.

3. Same Old Liverpool

A spirited performance from the travelling Aston Villa outfit meant Liverpool could hardly get anything more than a point from a gloomy Anfield in Saturday’s late night kickoff. It could have been worse for the Reds from Merseyside as they found themselves two goals down within the first half an hour of the encounter. Andres Weimann’s tap in was closely followed by Christain Benteke’s header before Sturridge scored in extra time to reduce the deficit. The home side were however level following what looked like a blatant Luis Suarez dive, which Steven Gerrard easily finished off. Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations have taken the turn for the worse as they now are level on points with Tottenham and fierce rivals Everton closing in. With now Lucas Leiva’s injury, Liverpool’s midfield look wafer thin with some tough games lined up.

4. Arsenal must believe they can win the title

A fantastic double from Santi Cazorla ensured there were no hiccups at the Emirates stadium as Arsenal, who weren’t at their best, managed to beat  s spirited Fulham side by a 2-0 margin. Yet another home win for the Gunners, ensured they kept their pole position in the table, as this was Arsenal’s fifth win in a row. Going with what Jack Wilshere rightly said, “Arsenal must believe they can win the title”, the Gunners can now approach every game with more confidence and lay claim to their Championship credentials. If I have to be skeptical though, they clearly need a striker before the transfer window slams shut in the last day of January.

5. Once Goliath, now Manchester United are David

Sunday’s reversal at the hands of Chelsea in Stamford Bridge was Manchester United’s seventh loss in the league this campaign, which virtually ends their dream to retain the Premier League title. The Red Devils are now 14 points behind first-place Arsenal and to make matters worse, David Moyes’ side are in danger of missing out on Champions League play, as they are six points behind Liverpool and Tottenham and four points behind sixth-place Everton. Quite astonishing!
