Fernando Torres: Should The Golden Boot Winner Stay At The Bridge Despite Cheslea’s Plan To Offload Him?

Share

Fernando Torres has done it again! The Spanish striker has snatched the Golden Boot of the Confederations Cup with five goals in the tournament. But the fallacy is, Torres’ performance remained highly questionable throughout the tournament and never did he look deserving of getting such a prestigious award.

Out of his five goals, four were scored against an opponent such as Tahiti and one against Nigeria. In the semi-final match against Italy, Torres did not impress much with his play and missed a couple of sitters. His first touch and his turnings were also not impressive at all. Most importantly, he seemed to lack the requisite fitness and had to be substituted when the match proceeded to the extra time. Overall, Fernando Torres did not perform enough to win the award and his stroke of luck played a key role in getting the coveted prize ahead of more able candidates like Fred and Neymar.

But then when a player wins a Golden Boot at the Confederations Cup, you got to sit back and have a second thought! Any plan that required Mourinho to drop Torres from the team, or even transfer him out of the club are certainly being reviewed again by the club management. Although the Blues are blessed with one of the most lethal midfields in the Premier League consisting of Mata, Oscar and Hazard, the only missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle is a prolific striker with an outstanding sense of goal and Chelsea’s strike force has definitely been a worrying factor for the club right throughout the previous season.

But on the positives, Torres did finish the season with 22 goals, by far the best after his big money transfer from Liverpool. Although, his game was far from satisfying, he has continued scoring goals for his national team and it looks like he has put the club in a situation where the management are having second thoughts about offloading him.

It would be greatly unfair to dismiss a player in whom a great amount of time and money has been invested, at a time when he is beginning to show signs of returning on that investment. Though we cannot say for sure that Mourinho will continue to deploy the Spaniard as Chelsea’s primary striker for next season, still presumably we can say that he will not be shown the door immediately.

Here is what the back pages say about Torres:

In a very surprising move, Chelsea are willing to offer Fernando Torres plus cash for AC Milan striker Stephan El Shaarawy, according to Italian source Sport Mediaset. It is suggested Chelsea will offer €35 million cash plus the 12 month loan of Fernando Torres in exchange for El Shaarawy.

Previously when Torres was linked with Spanish giants Barcelona, he insisted that he wants to stay with the London outfit and work with Mourinho. Qouted by the ESPN, Torres said:

“It’s always nice a club like that is interested, but I want to stay and will talk to Mourinho later,” stated Torres when asked by reporters about Barcelona’s interest.

“I want to stay at Chelsea. I have contract, I want to be the best at my position and I don’t think there is a better place to be. Mourinho has won far more than many of us. It’s a new challenge and I am looking forward to it.”

So when the news comes out that Chelsea are willing to swap him for another striker, Should the Spaniard have a second thought?
